Jawaharlal
Nehru Port Trust,
is planning to construct a fifth container terminal near Nhava island, at Nhava
Sheva in Mumbai. The terminal will entail an investment of Rs.5,000 crore.
The government has approved the concept of a fifth container terminal and has given its in-principle agreement to conduct
feasibility study for the proposed project.
The
port team has given a detailed presentation on the proposed fifth terminal. The
government too has given the go ahead for the required environment impact study
for the project.
Cost
and other technical details are yet to be worked out and the feasibility study
for the project will soon be initiated.
JN
Port will be required to handle container traffic to the tune of 6.8 million
TEUs by 2015-16.The advance plans of a possible fifth terminal will give the
export-import business a boost. On
the completion of the proposed terminal, the port will be able to handle over
7million TEUs of container traffic.
Meanwhile,
JNPT is in the process of preparing a feasibility report for the development of
a fourth container terminal and a marine chemical terminal through Consulting
Engineering Services (India) Pvt Ltd.
CES
has submitted the inception report and it will soon submit the feasibility
report. The cost of the fourth container terminal, including two phases, is
estimated at Rs.4,000 crore.
The
estimated capacity of the fourth container terminal is 1.5 million TEUs, while
the third container terminal at JN Port, which will soon be operational, is at
1.3 million TEUs.
The third terminal, Gateway
Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTI), is developed by a consortium formed by rail PSU
Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor) and Danish shipping giant Maersk A
S.
JN
Port is also moving ahead with its Rs.800 crore project of deepening and
widening of the main harbour channel and JNP Channel to handle 6,000 TEU
container vessels using tidal window.
The
port may raise loans from the market in addition to its internal accruals to
fund the channel deepening project. The project will begin in April 2006 and
will be completed within 27 months.
