JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal announced a Rs one trillion investment to establish a 25-million-tonne steel plant in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. This announcement was made during the Advantage Vidarbha Conclave held in Nagpur, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The investment will be spread over the next seven to eight years and is considered one of the most ambitious projects in India’s steel sector. Jindal described the upcoming Gadchiroli steel plant as the "largest in the world" and "most beautiful and environmentally friendly" steel-making facility. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within four years. It promises to significantly boost employment and accelerate economic growth in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
To support the growing steel demand, India introduced the National Steel Policy (NSP) in 2017, targeting a production capacity of 300 million tonne by 2030. India’s steel exports primarily go to markets such as Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. India is currently the second-largest producer of crude steel globally, with an annual production capacity of 125 to 130 million tonne.
