Jawaharlal Nehru Port on 17 October, 2023 unveiled four key projects worth Rs 8,363 crore during the third edition of the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) in Mumbai, which was virtually addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The four projects include fourth container terminal construction work, Phase-II at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), upgradation, operation, maintenance, and transfer of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT), additional liquid berth terminal, and port-based multi-product special economic zone (SEZ).
Of the four projects, foundation stone was laid for the construction of fourth container terminal, which is a public private partnership (PPP) between JNPA and Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals, for advanced infrastructure and logistics solutions to the region. The Prime Minister also dedicated the (SEZ) to the nation.
The transfer of JNPCT on PPP basis by JNPA to Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminals is intended to further streamline operations, and is expected to result in increased efficiency and world-class services for container handling.
With these projects, the port's container capacity will go up by 35 percent from 7.7 million TEUs to 10.4 million TEUs, and the liquid cargo handling capacity will increase by 62.5 percent. Also, the newly constructed additional liquid berth terminal which was inaugurated on this occasion, is expected to further diversify the port's capabilities, and cater to additional liquid cargo demand.
The launch of the multi-product SEZ will provide a dedicated area for various industries, leading to increased investment option in manufacturing, services, trade sectors and employment opportunities for regional ecosystem.
