Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has initiated a feasibility study to introduce a water transport system in Alappuzha, following the success of the Kochi Water Metro.
The proposed network aims to enhance connectivity across Alappuzha's backwaters, primarily benefiting the thriving tourism sector. A KMRL expert team recently visited the region to assess the project's viability, with plans to connect popular destinations such as Kumarakom, Muhamma, and Pathiramanal Island. Unlike the Kochi network, which uses shorter routes, the Alappuzha model will involve longer stretches requiring high-capacity electric vessels.
KMRL officials emphasised that the new system would provide a safe, efficient, and eco-friendly travel option. The feasibility study will extend beyond Alappuzha, with assessments planned for Kollam and a pre-feasibility study underway for water metro services between Aluva and Nedumbassery Airport. A preliminary report is expected in a month.
