The first unit of the Kaiga
nuclear power project is expected to commence commercial generation in the
second week of September 2000. According to Mr. V.K. Sharma, the project
director, the 220 MW atomic reactor is ready for power generation in all aspects.
The completion of the first unit was delayed because the undersurface of a portion of the
inner dome collapsed on May 13, 1994.
The company plans to set up two
more units of 220 MW at the same site and has already invited tenders for the
preparation of a detailed feasibility report and EPC documents.
