National
Hydroelectric Power Corporation's 5.25 MW Kalpong project
in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, would be dedicated to the nation, on 9
November 2001. The project is the first hydel power initiative in the Islands.
The project has been
completed 15 months ahead of schedule. It would generate 14.83 million units of
energy annually and would benefit North and Middle Andaman.
The features of the
project include:

Surface power house with three units of 1.75 MW each, with one as spare
unit
·
34 metre high concrete dam on the left fork of the Kalpong river
·
25 metre high rockfill dam on the right fork of the Kalpong river
·
257 metre long intake approach channel
·
133 metre long intake tunnel, D-shaped of size 2m x 2m
