The Karnataka Government has proposed to set up a new port at Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 600 crore, will be developed under public private partnership (PPP) model. The foundation stone for the proposed port project is expected to be laid by November 2013.
Meanwhile, the state government has also received a proposal for setting up a captive port from Jindal Group, with an investment of Rs 500 crore. The proposal is under consideration of the state government.
Besides, the Karnataka Government is planning to build a protection wall along the coastline in the state, at an investment of Rs 950 crore, under Asian Development Bank assistance to provide permanent protection against recurring sea erosion every year. The wall is being built at places like Ullal in Dakshina Kannada district, for which tenders have been floated.
