Karnataka government is preparing for a major power infrastructure upgrade to support the growing demand from data centres.
Speaking at The India Advantage (TIA) Summit, Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Energy, announced that the state will enhance its power transmission capacity from the current 400 kV to 750 kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) lines. This strategic move comes in the wake of Google’s announcement to invest Rs 87,520 crore in an AI-driven data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, signalling a rising trend of tech investment in India.
The upgraded 750 kV lines will enable Karnataka to handle larger electricity volumes required by data centres and tech infrastructure. With 80 percent percent of Karnataka’s energy needs already met by renewable sources, sustainable growth through innovation, collaboration, and resource pooling has been emphasised. The transmission upgrade aims to attract further investments, boost clean energy usage, and foster economic growth, reinforcing Karnataka’s position as a technology and energyforward state.
