The government of Kenya is planning to construct a new port in the lakeside city of Kisumu county at a cost of USD 140 million as part of the joint standard gauge railway project.
The new port will be developed at Kisian, 16 km from the city centre. Two years ago, the government signed an agreement with China Exim Bank to finance its construction.
The port will be linked by rail, with other auxiliary connections access roads, electricity connections and satellite buildings. Once complete, it will be leased out to sub-operators under an agreement with the Kenya Ports Authority. The new port will have two multipurpose berths of 3,000 tonne and one work boat berth.
