Kenya will construct first hybrid power plant in Africa in Meru county. A deal worth USD 145 million has been inked between Investment Authority (KenInvest), the Meru County Government and global renewable energy developers Windlab and Eurus Energy.
The hybrid project ‘the Meru County Energy Park’ will be a large-scale facility that combines wind, solar PV and battery storage. The facility will feature up to 20 wind turbines and over 40,000 solar panels.
The construction work on the project is set to commence in 2021. It is projected to provide up to 80 MW of clean energy and will power over 2,00,000 households.
The project will be taken up in public-private partnership (PPP). Once operational, the Meru County Government, through the Meru County Investment and Development Corporation (MCIDC) will own part of the project. The deal also includes capacity building and knowledge transfer efforts.
