The Kerala government has granted administrative sanction of Rs 1.83 crore to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) aimed at transforming Vizhinjam International Seaport into a major industrial hub.
A consultant, to be finalised shortly from tenders floated last year, will be given up to one year to complete the study, though early submission will be accepted. The DPR will map container yards, logistics clusters, marine access, and allied infrastructure to strengthen port-led industrialization. Officials stressed the urgency of creating a supportive ecosystem, noting that Vizhinjam currently lacks container yards, freight handling zones, and trucking terminals—key requirements to initiate gateway cargo operations.
"We are getting numerous inquiries from investors seeking land near the port. However, inflated land prices make it unviable," a senior official said. To address this, the Kerala Maritime Board has proposed transferring five acres near Harbour Road for container yards and warehouses under a PPP model. Additionally, Vizhinjam International Seaport will earmark 200 acres for industrial infrastructure, including food processing and manufacturing clusters.
