The government of Kerala has scraped orders for construction of a greenfield airport at Aranmula, in Pathanamthitta district in the state of Kerala.
The Cabinet also scraped all the orders the government had issued related to the Aranmula airport project. From the beginning, the project mooted in February 2009, started off with controversies.
On 2 February, 2010, the state government gave in-principle clearance to the project and declared Aranmula and its surrounding areas as an industrial area.
The Civil Aviation Ministry granted its clearance in spite of environmental activists and political parties agitating against the project.
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) granted EC to the project on 18 November, 2013.
However, on 28 May, 2014, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) cancelled the environmental clearance, and on 8 May, 2015, the Defence Ministry withdrew its clearance.
