The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) has made a fresh proposal to the Union Ministry
of Defence offering alternative land at Roychowk further up the Hooghly River,
after the ministry refused to part with land required for the proposed Diamond
Harbour container terminal project.
The KoPT requires 125 acre from various sources such as Defence department
(43 acre), private landowners (40 acre), Directorate-General of Lighthouse and
Lightships (24 acre), West Bengal Government (15 acre) and the Railways (three
acre).
The Defence Ministry had refused to part with 43 acre saying that the land
will be used by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
The land being on the waterfront is critically important for the proposed
container terminal project. Therefore, KoPT has offered the ship-builder an
alternative site (43 acre) at Roychowk. At Roychowk, the KoPT has about 60 acre
of which 43 acres can be made available to GRSE.
