Lloyds Metals and Energy (LMEL) has successfully commissioned its 3,60,000 tonne per annum (360 KTPA) sponge iron plant at Ghugus, Maharashtra.
The first of the two kilns has been fired, with operations being scaled up in a phased and calibrated manner. Executed on a turnkey basis by Lloyds Engineering Works, the project was completed in record time after securing environmental clearance (EC) in February 2024. This commissioning marks LMEL’s third major facility launched in the current financial year, following the 85 KM slurry pipeline and the four MTPA pellet plant.
With the new Ghugus unit, LMEL’s total installed sponge iron capacity has increased to 700 KTPA. Strategically located, the plant will enable captive utilisation of mined iron ore while strengthening the company’s integrated steel value chain. LMEL’s track record of delivering complex projects within defined timelines underscores its executionfocused approach. This discipline has improved operational readiness and enhanced capital efficiency, driving stronger Return on Invested Capital (ROIC).
