Mukand Sumi Special Steel (MSSSL) has announced plans to establish a greenfield integrated steelmaking facility in Kanakapura, Koppal, Karnataka, with an investment of Rs 2,345 crore, subject to environmental approvals.
The facility will have a production capacity of 0.35 million tonne per annum (MTPA) and is scheduled to commence operations by early 2028. This expansion will boost MSSSL’s overall capacity to 7,00,000 tonne annually, strengthening its position among India’s leading special steel makers. A joint venture between India’s Bajaj Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, MSSSL currently produces around 3,50,000 tonne of special steel each year, catering largely to automobile and engineering sectors.
The company, operational since 2018, manufactures bars, wire rods, and secondary products across 400-plus grades and specifications. The upcoming plant will adopt a zero liquid, solid, and gaseous discharge model, with more than 95 percent of its power sourced from renewables, supporting MSSSL’s target of net-zero steelmaking by 2050. Future phases include hydrogen-ready systems and carbon capture technologies.
