In a major engineering feat, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) successfully installed a 48-mtrs.-long steel girder as part of the steel framework for Mumbai Metro Line 4, connecting Wadala to Kasarvadavli.
The installation, executed over two nights, involved four girders—each 14 mtrs. tall, being positioned above the busy Ghodbunder Road at Kapurbawdi Junction, a complex and high-traffic intersection. To ensure minimal public disruption and maximum safety, the operation used 700-tonne and 550-tonne cranes with additional backup equipment. More than 100 engineers and labourers coordinated the high-precision process, backed by seamless collaboration among multiple departments. With this, all special steel spans on the Wadala-Kasarvadavli corridor are now complete.
Mumbai Metro Line 4 spans 32.32 km with 32 stations and aims to enhance east-west connectivity, linking southern-central Mumbai with Thane. The MMRDA reported that 84.5 percent of construction is completed, keeping Phase 1 commissioning on track and poised to significantly reduce travel time across the corridor.
