In a significant move towards sustainability and self-reliance, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced a plan to install solar energy projects across its properties, targeting a generation of 300 MW annually.
The initiative, revealed by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, aims to cut electricity costs and reduce the corporation's reliance on government subsidies. Solar panels will be installed on depots, workshops, bus stands, and unused land, with additional barren land potentially leased for expansion.
With the MSRTC’s power demand set to rise due to the planned electric bus fleet, the initiative could save the corporation nearly Rs 1,000 crore annually. The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership model, leveraging both state and Central renewable energy schemes. This project is expected to set a benchmark for renewable energy adoption across the state.
