The Maharashtra government has announced plans to establish India's first artificial intelligence (AI) university, aligning with the national "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision and India's goal of becoming a USD five trillion economy. This initiative follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' renewed emphasis on AI-driven governance, highlighting the state's commitment to technological advancement.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, in a high-level meeting at the state secretariat, stressed the necessity of a world-class AI university dedicated to pioneering research and education in AI and emerging technologies. He has directed the formation of a specialised committee to strategise and oversee the initiative. The meeting was attended by IT Minister Ashish Shelar, Additional Chief Secretary of Higher and Technical Education B Venugopal Reddy and other senior officials. The university aims to position Maharashtra as a global leader in AI education, research, and industry collaboration.
The expert panel will analyse global AI education models, evaluate industry demands, and devise a comprehensive strategy for the university’s structure and curriculum. The institution will focus on AI subfields such as machine learning, data science, robotics, and automation while fostering collaborations with global tech firms, research institutions, and startup ecosystems. The committee will draft a roadmap emphasising pioneering research, technology integration, and global competitiveness.
The university will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, integrating AI applications across diverse sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, finance, and smart governance.
