Maharashtra plans to install floating solar power projects on dams across the Krishna and Godavari river basins to boost renewable energy generation and support environmental conservation.
Speaking at a seminar in Pune, State Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil emphasised that this initiative will make use of existing water bodies for clean energy production, reducing the need for land acquisition. The projects will help strengthen Maharashtra’s green energy portfolio while promoting sustainable development. The move follows directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has urged the water resources department to actively pursue floating solar initiatives.
These projects will generate renewable electricity without occupying land, an important advantage in a densely populated state. Floating solar plants are expected to benefit agricultural communities by supporting their electricity needs and offering added benefits such as reducing water evaporation and improving solar panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of water.
