Maruti Suzuki, as part of its green logistics focus to tap the country's vast railway network for shipping new cars from its factories has built an in-plant railway siding at its factory in Gujarat. On 12 March, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the project at the company's plant at Hansalpur.
Apart from being Indai's first such project. this also forms part of the automaker's strategy to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions in line with the national push towards clean mobility solutions. The company, along with joint venture partners, has invested more than Rs 1,081 crore in the project.
Moreover, the carmaker plans to build similar facilities in Manesar and Kharkhoda (both in Haryana). Overall, the company plans to substantially grow the share of new cars shipped via railways. In terms of the number of vehicles transported via railways, Maruti Suzuki is working twoards doubling annual production capacity to four million vehicles by 2030.
