The
Maharashtra state government is planning to augment water supply to Mumbai and
its suburbs. As a part of its plans, a proposal has been mooted for upgradation
of the Middle Vaitarna dam at a cost of Rs.1,200 crore. Environmental clearance
is now awaited from the Centre.
An
additional Rs.600 investment is planned for construction of a pipeline for the Bhatsa
dam. This scheme is expected to provide
the city and its suburbs with an additional 455 million litres per day of
water.
Several
water augmentation schemes have been proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) including rain water harvesting in old buildings of the city.
The
above schemes have been necessitated due falling lake levels over the last few
years as a result of insufficient rainfall.
