Mobis India, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor India, inaugurated its electric vehicle battery system assembly (BSA) plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Spanning 8.15 acres and situated next to Hyundai’s vehicle manufacturing facility, the plant represents a key milestone in advancing electric mobility and manufacturing capabilities. The inauguration was led by Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, with the presence of key state officials and company leadership. The plant has an initial installed capacity of 36,000 units per annum, with scalability to 75,000 units in the short term. It will focus on assembling high-performance battery systems for EVs manufactured locally. The Hyundai CRETA Electric will be the first vehicle equipped with battery packs from this facility, reflecting Hyundai’s increasing emphasis on domestic EV production.
“This facility strengthens Tamil Nadu’s localisation capabilities by ensuring critical EV components are made here. This project reflects Tamil Nadu’s transition to smart manufacturing and our commitment to creating high-value employment,” state’s Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said. The project is set to generate 255 direct and indirect work opportunities, offering a boost to the local economy.
Currently, the plant produces high-performance nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery packs and is expected to support Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery production in the near future. It incorporates fully automated assembly lines using robotic systems to achieve high precision and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the facility is built on eco-friendly principles, incorporating sustainable materials and practices to minimise environmental impact.
