Japanese electronics giant Murata, a key Apple supplier, has commenced packaging and shipping multilayer ceramic capacitors from its new facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking its first venture in India.
Located in the OneHub Chennai Industrial Park, the 3,500 sq. mtrs. facility will supply components to smartphone, electric vehicle (EV), and industrial machinery manufacturers. Murata holds a 40 percent global share in multilayer ceramic capacitors, used in devices ranging from smartphones to NASA’s Mars helicopter. Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, TRB Rajaa, hailed the launch as a significant milestone for the state’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
The facility strengthens Murata’s global supply chain and supports India’s push to become a hub for advanced component manufacturing, potentially boosting local smartphone and EV production capabilities. The company is a known supplier for Apple iPhones and other brands like Samsung. However, it remains unclear if the Chennai plant will directly serve Apple’s Indian manufacturing partners, including Foxconn (Hon Hai) and Tata Electronics.
