National Hydro-electric Power Corporation
(NHPC) has plans to add a capacity of 4,357 MW during the Tenth Plan (2002-07) and
11,194 MW during the Eleventh Plan (2007-2012).
Further, the central PSU has taken up preparation
of pre-feasibility report of 43 schemes aggregating to a capacity of 21,345 MW.
This constitutes a major portion of the 50,000 MW hydel initiative launched by the
Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The status of hydel projects planned/ being
executed by NHPC is discussed below:
On-going
Projects
Chamera Stage II (3 x 100 MW): Work has reached an advanced
stage. Commissioning may be possible 9 months ahead of the targeted completion of
December 2004.
Dul Hasti (3 x 130 MW): The
problems pertaining to the excavation of the head race tunnel were tackled
successfully and day lighting of the tunnel was done on 27 August 2003. Commercial
operations are scheduled to commence in January 2004.
Dhauliganga (4 x 70 MW) and Teesta Stage V (3 x 170
MW): Work on schedule and progressing
satisfactorily.
New Projects
Parbati Stage II (4 x 200 MW): CCEA approval received.
Subansiri Lower (2000 MW):
Union Government approval received in August 2003.
Sewa (3 x 40 MW): Union Government
approval received in August 2003.
Subsidiaries
Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation (JV with
Govt. of Madhya Pradesh):
Indira Sagar/ Narmada Sagar (8 x 125 MW): Two units are expected to be completed by October 2003, another 2
units by January 2004. The remaining units are scheduled to be commissioned
progressively during 2004.
Omkareshwar (8 x 65 MW): Union
government approval received in May 2003. Foundation stone laid by the Prime
Minister on 30 August 2003. Construction activities commenced.
Joint
Ventures
Puruliya PSS (4 x 225 MW): Clearance from Union Government awaited for formation of the joint
venture company with West Bengal state government.
