NITI Aayog has launched a draft blueprint aimed at transforming Andhra Pradesh into one of India’s top three renewable energy hubs by 2035 under its Accelerating Sustainable State Energy Transition (ASSET) platform.
The plan was presented by NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam to Chief Secretary K Vijayanand at the State Secretariat, and outlines a comprehensive strategy to accelerate the state’s energy transition, focusing on reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for all consumers. Currently, about 47 percent of Andhra Pradesh’s power generation comes from renewable sources. The blueprint targets adding 35 GW of solar and 12 GW of wind capacity, along with 55–60 GWh of storage, to meet domestic energy needs. In addition, significant export-oriented renewable projects are proposed, including 30 GW of solar and 25–30 GW of wind capacity.
The blueprint proposes investments of Rs 3.3–3.4 lakh crore for energy transition and Rs 4–4.2 lakh crore for creating a renewable energy export hub, and envisages total investments of approx. Rs 7.5 lakh crore, with about 90 percent expected from private players, potentially creating new employment opportunities for up to six lakh people. Infrastructure upgrades are also a key component, with funds earmarked for transmission modernisation, green corridors, substations and distribution strengthening. NITI Aayog estimates that power purchase costs could fall to about Rs 3.90–Rs four per unit, making energy more affordable for households, farmers and industries.
