NLC India (NLCIL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to establish a pilot project at Neyveli in Tamil Nadu for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) from fly ash, a thermal power generation by-product.
Supported technically by BARC, the initiative aims to address fly ash management while accessing strategic materials vital for healthcare, clean energy, high-tech manufacturing, advanced research, and national security. NLCIL Chairman and Managing Director Prasanna Kumar Motupalli stated, “Our partnership with BARC is a major step towards sustainable resource use, circular economy, and India’s self-reliance in critical minerals.”
REEs are essential for technologies like renewable energy systems, medical equipment, electronics, and defence systems, but global supply chains are heavily concentrated. This indigenous effort seeks to cut import dependence and boost India’s position in the global critical minerals sector. Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy lauded the milestone as a significant stride towards strategic mineral security and environmental stewardship.
