Nagpur, selected under the Centre’s Smart Cities Mission in 2016, is approaching the end of its development plan, though seven projects remain incomplete.
Initially targeted for completion by June 2021, deadlines were extended multiple times, with the final cutoff now set at 31 December, 2025. Of the 47 projects implemented under the Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation (NSSCDCL), 39 are complete and under transfer to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
Funding for the initiative included Rs 741.63 crore from the Centre, along with Rs 400 crore from the state and Rs 124 crore from the central Smart Cities fund. The Rs 524 crore Smart and Safe City Project introduced 17 solutions such as CCTV surveillance, traffic monitoring, and an integrated command centre, while the Rs 741.62 crore area-based development plan targeted 1,743 acres in East Nagpur.
Six pending works, mainly roads, are progressing, while one rehabilitation project is stalled due to land-related disputes. "NMC will pay ?25 crore annually to KELTRON for CCTV maintenance," confirmed additional commissioner Vasumana Pant.
