Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a new Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) building in Rajarhat, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, marking a significant advancement in India’s evidence-based criminal justice system.
Built at a cost of Rs 90 crore, the state-of-the-art facility is set to serve multiple Eastern and Northeastern states, including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and Assam. The Minister emphasised the critical role of forensic science under the newly introduced criminal laws, which prioritise forensic evidence, documentation, and precise punishment.
The Rajarhat CFSL would assist police stations in implementing these laws through expert forensic support. He also outlined the Central government’s broader vision to create a nationwide network of forensic labs, each serving clusters of three to four states.
Over the next two years, the Ministry of Home Affairs will focus on building infrastructure and conducting extensive training. A national campaign to educate police stations on forensic processes will launch in January 2026, ensuring streamlined investigations and justice delivery.
