The Neyyar drinking water project, envisioned to alleviate Thiruvananthapuram’s acute water shortage, remains stalled due to delays by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and Kerala Water Authority (KWA) in submitting the detailed project report (DPR).
Despite being tasked two years ago, KIIFB has not provided the DPR, leading to the absence of financial and administrative sanctions. Areas like Kazhakkoottam, Vizhinjam, Technopark, and others are grappling with water scarcity, as the city requires over 400 MLD daily, but existing plants supply less than 320 MLD. With KIIFB showing little progress, KWA has formed its own five-member team to prepare the DPR within two years. KIIFB’s appointed agency, RITES, has also faced non-cooperation from KWA.
The Rs 680 crore project involves constructing a 120 MLD plant, water tanks, a 23.8 km transmission line, and a new road from Kattakada to PTP Nagar for pipeline laying.
