In a landmark move to strengthen India-UK educational collaboration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have announced that nine British universities will set up campuses across India.
The University of Southampton has already launched its Gurugram campus and enrolled its first students, leading the initiative. Other UK institutions, including the Universities of Liverpool, York, Aberdeen, Bristol,, plan campuses in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Gujarat’s GIFT City. The University of Bristol’s enterprise campus in Mumbai is slated to open in 2026, while the University of Surrey will focus on AI, finance, and cybersecurity.
This initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to provide Indian students with quality education domestically, foster UK-India joint research, and promote academia-industry partnerships for innovation and skill development. The announcement was made during the CEO Summit in Mumbai.
Additionally, cooperation on critical minerals through an Industry Guild and Supply Chain Observatory with a satellite campus at ISM Dhanbad was also unveiled.
