OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has plans for a major expansion in India with plans to build one of the country’s largest artificial intelligence data centres, expected to have at least one GW of capacity.
The initiative positions OpenAI alongside tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Reliance, which have already heavily invested in India’s digital infrastructure. As reported by Bloomber, OpenAI is in early discussions with potential Indian partners, though the site and timelines remain undecided. CEO Sam Altman, slated to visit India later this month, may provide more details during his trip.
India has emerged as a key market for OpenAI, prompting the company to open an office in New Delhi, expand its local team. The data centre aligns with the government’s USD 1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, aimed at developing homegrown AI models. The facility would improve AI services, offer faster, customised solutions, and strengthen trust with regulators by keeping sensitive data local.
