The high-level clearance authority of
Orissa government, headed by Chief Minister, Mr.Naveen Patnaik, on 20 September
2006 cleared 11 thermal power projects envisaging a generation capacity of
15,920 MW with an investment of Rs.63,245 crore. These include:

The authority also cleared Grasim
Industries' proposal for setting up a 3.5 million tpa cement plant in Sundergarh
district at an investment of Rs.1,200 crore. The MoUs for these projects will be
signed by 26 September 2006. With this, the combined generation capacity of the
thermal power projects lined up in Orissa has increased to 20,000 MW.
In June 2006, the state government
signed MoUs with Naba-Bharat Power, Mahanadi Aban Power Co and GMR Energy for
projects envisaging a combined investment of Rs.13,402 crore and a generation
capacity of 3,070 MW.
Orissa Hydro Power Corporation also
proposes to set up a 1,000 MW coal-based power plant in Dhenkanal district, and
the Orissa Power Generation Corporation, in which US-based utility AES holds a
49 per cent stake, plans to expand the capacity of its Ib Valley power plant by
500 MW.
