Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Phase-1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport today, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.
During his visit, he also took a visual tour of the newly-built airport facilities. In addition, the PM is set to launch the final phase of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, enhancing the city’s urban transport network. These developments aim to boost connectivity and streamline travel across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, supporting economic growth and easing commuter experience.
Developed under a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO, the Rs 19,650 crore greenfield airport is India’s first fully digital airport, featuring AI-enabled automated terminals and advanced digital services like online baggage drop and digital immigration. Spread over 1,160 hectares, the airport will initially handle 20 million passengers annually with one runway and terminal, expanding to 155 million passengers with four terminals and two runways in the future. Commercial flights are expected to begin in December, with major carriers such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air operating.
The airport promises significant economic benefits, creating over 2,00,000 work opportunities across sectors including aviation, IT, and hospitality. It is also India’s first major aviation hub with multimodal connectivity, linked seamlessly by expressways, metro lines, suburban rail, and waterways, enhancing Mumbai’s position alongside global cities like London, New York, and Tokyo that have multiple international airports.
