Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on 06 August, 2023 for the redevelopment of over 508 railway stations across India at a cost of approximately Rs 24,470 crore.
The proposed project will spread across around 27 states and union territories, including 55 each in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, 49 in Bihar, 44 in Maharashtra, 37 in West Bengal, 34 in Madhya Pradesh, 32 in Assam, 25 in Odisha, 22 in Punjab, 21 each in Gujarat and Telangana, 20 in Jharkhand, 18 each in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, 15 in Haryana, 13 in Karnataka among others.
Among these 508 stations, the PM stated that around 55 ‘Amrit Stations’ will be developed with an outlay of Rs 4,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, 34 stations in Madhya Pradesh for approx. Rs 1,000 crore, 44 stations in Maharashtra at Rs 1,500 crore, while the railway stations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala among others will be redeveloped.
These stations will be redeveloped with a 40-60 years' horizon, and will integrate both sides of the station and segregate arrivals and departures. The redevelopment of 508 stations is a part of the larger goal of revamping around 1,300 stations under the 'Amrit Bharat Station Scheme' to India's ‘Viksit Bharat’ goal.
With this, the redevelopment project aims to provide modern passenger amenities ensuring well-designed traffic circulation, inter-modal integration and signage for guidance of passengers. The PM also stated that this will strengthen the ‘Bharat Gaurav Yatra Trains’ which connect places of historical relevance and pilgrimages.
