The Maharashtra Cabinet Sub-committee on infrastructure has approved two major transport projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) – a 16-km underground metro line between Wadala and Gateway of India, and a 25-km elevated road linking Thane with the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who chaired the meeting, said, "These decisions will provide a modern transportation system and a new direction and momentum for development of cities like Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Nagpur." Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and chief secretary Rajesh Kumar were also present.
The metro corridor, to be known as Metro 11, will cost around Rs 24,000 crore and will be financed through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It will be Mumbai’s second fully underground metro after the Colaba-Seepz line, featuring a depot at Anik-Pratiksha Nagar. The plan includes a commercial complex at the depot site in partnership with BEST, enabling additional revenue generation.
The committee also cleared procurement of 268 air-conditioned suburban rakes, two new railway lines between Lonavala and Pune, along with a Nagpur ring road and township project.
