Prime Minister Narendra Modi will review two major irrigation projects in Telangana—the J Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme and the Indiramma Flood Flow Canal (IFFC), on October 29 in New Delhi.
The Jal Shakti Ministry has summoned Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao and senior irrigation officials for discussions, focusing on pending issues and fund requirements under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP). The Devadula project, now estimated at Rs 13,445 crore—more than double its original cost—is aimed at irrigating 2.49 lakh hectares by lifting 38.16 TMC of Godavari water. However, land acquisition across nine districts, totalling 819 hectares, remains a key bottleneck.
The IFFC project intends to irrigate drought-prone areas in six districts by diverting 20 TMC of Godavari floodwaters through a gravity-cum-lift system, using the Mid Manair and Gouravelli reservoirs. A command area of 32,378 hectares is targeted. The state will seek additional funds to expedite these projects, with completion of the Devadula scheme slated for 2027.
