The Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (PVUNL), a joint venture of NTPC and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam (JBVNL) will see the commissioning of its Phase-1 power units by December 2025. Located in Ramgarh district, Phase-I includes three 800 MW units, collectively generating 2,400 MW of power.

The first unit will be operational by January 2025, the second by September, and the third by December. Of the total output, 85 percent - over 2,000 MW, will be supplied to Jharkhand, significantly boosting the state's power capacity. Plans for phase-II include a 2,800 MW capacity power plant, further solidifying PVUNL’s commitment to energy expansion. Fuel for the plant will be sourced from the Banhadi coal block in Latehar district, where progress has been made in obtaining clearances, with eight out of nine villages granting no objection certificates (NOCs).

Established in 2015, the NTPC-JBVNL joint venture took over the assets of the Patratu Thermal Power Station in 2016 to develop the 4,000 MW superthermal power plant.
