Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, inaugurated the capital’s first pilot project to convert overhead electrical wires into an underground power distribution network on 12 July, 2025.
The project is being implemented at BH Block Colony, Janta Flats, Shalimar Bagh, within the operational area of Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL), the discom confirmed in a release. This pilot initiative, inspired by advanced power infrastructure models from global cities, aims to create a safer, more efficient, and aesthetically enhanced urban power supply system. It is intended to serve as a scalable and replicable model for the rest of Delhi.
Under this scheme, five km of existing overhead lines (both HT and LT) will be removed. In its place, a 10-km underground LT (440V) network and a 1.2-km underground HT (11kV) network will be installed. New GI octagonal poles will also be added to enhance street lighting. The underground system will ensure 24×7 power supply, even during adverse weather, reduce power interruptions, improve safety in densely populated areas, and enhance Delhi’s urban landscape by freeing up space and eliminating visual clutter.
