The Maharashtra government has submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for the expansion of Pune Airport.
The plan involves acquiring over 300 acres of land to extend the runway, increase parking bays, and establish a new aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility. This MRO facility will allow for local aircraft servicing, reducing the need to rely on major cities for maintenance. A dedicated terminal for private aircraft and helicopters will also be built to cater to the growing demand for aviation services.
The proposal is pending clearance from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) as the airport operates under the jurisdiction of the Indian Air Force. The acquisition will involve both government and private land.
