RHI Magnesita has launched India’s first-ever robotic system for caster operations at JSW Vijayanagar Metallics (JVML), a JSW Steel subsidiary.
This breakthrough, part of RHI’s 4PRO solution focusing on Performance, Partnership, People, and Planet, marks a significant step in steel industry automation. The system manages 350-tonne ladles and automates critical casting tasks including ladle shroud changes, powder feeding, temperature checks, and tundish sampling. Integrated with SX3 slide gate technology, EMLI LadleSlag sensors, and robotic cells on the Continuous Casting Machine (CCM), it enhances operational efficiency, safety, and product quality.
By eliminating human exposure to molten metal, heat, and fumes, the system sets new benchmarks in workplace safety while optimising production cycles. It also reduces material wastage, rework, and scrap, leading to substantial cost savings. Real-time monitoring via sensors and vision systems ensures early defect detection and consistent product quality. Leaders from both companies hailed the move as a landmark in technological innovation and operational excellence for the Indian steel sector.
