Reliance NU Suntech, a subsidiary of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Power, has announced a Rs 10,000 crore investment for developing Asia’s largest solar power and battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The company has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
The agreement entails the supply of 930 MW of solar power integrated with a 465 MW/1,860 MWh BESS facility. To meet the contracted supply, over 1,700 MWp of solar generation capacity will be installed, equipped with advanced storage systems to ensure consistent and reliable energy delivery. The power will be delivered at a fixed tariff of ?3.53 per kilowatt hour (kWh).
The capacity to be developed over the next 24 months, stems from Reliance NU Suntech’s success in SECI’s Tranche XVII auction held in December 2024. The company emerged as the largest bidder, securing the full 930 MW of solar power and 465 MW/1,860 MWh of storage capacity, outcompeting four other major energy players vying for 2,000 MW of solar and 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh of storage. Reliance Power has already submitted a Rs 378 crore Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) to SECI, completing the auction and contracting process within five months.
The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to India’s renewable energy targets and enhance its energy storage infrastructure. As the single largest solar-BESS project at a single location in Asia, it not only underscores the country’s energy ambitions but also positions Reliance Power as a key player in the clean energy domain.
