The Union Government approved the revised cost estimates for establishing six
new AIIMS like institutions and upgradation of 13 existing Government Medical
College Institutions under PMSSY (Phase I) for an outlay of Rs 9,307.62 crore.
Earlier, the CCEA had approved the Scheme for Rs 3,975.99 crore. However, due
to considerable changes in the cost and scope of the works the requirement of
funds has trebled necessitating a fresh approval.
The new AIIMS-like institutions are located at Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh),
Bhubaneswar (Orissa), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Patna (Bihar), Raipur (Chhattisgarh)
and Rishikesh (Uttarakhand). The institutions are expected to be completed by
end-2012.
The upgradation of Government Medical Colleges is being taken up at
Thiruvananthapuram; Salem; Bangalore; Kolkata; Jammu; Srinagar; Nizam's
Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad; Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute
of Medical Sciences, Lucknow; B J Medical College, Ahmedabad; Rajendra Institute
of Medical Science, Ranchi; Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi; Sri
Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati; and Grants Medical
College, Mumbai.
