SAIL is mulling to set up a 10 million tpa steel plant in Jharkhand if it is
given assurances of iron-ore supplies.
SAIL has stated that it is open to partnering with NMDC in setting up a steel
plant in Karnataka, primarily catering to sectors like the automobile and
consumer durables. NMDC has proposed setting up a five million tpa steel plant
in a JV format. However, the proposal is still at a nascent stage.
According to sources, SAIL is expected to raise the overall capacity for
value-added steel products to close to three million tpa in the next two years.
The company is likely to commission 1.2 million tpa cold-rolled steel mill in
Bokaro (Jharkhand) in mid-2011. Coupled with its present capacity at Rourkela
and Bokaro Steel plants, the company's overall capacity to produce such items
will be 2.7 million tpa.
