Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), has entered into a 30-year concession agreement with JSW Infrastructure for a Rs 740-crore project aimed at modernising container handling facilities at the Netaji Subhas Dock.
The project involves reconstructing Berth 8 and installing rail-mounted quay cranes (RMQCs) at Berths 7 and 8 to enable faster and more efficient container cargo operations. Supported by a 25-acre backup area, the upgraded terminal is expected to handle an annual capacity of five lakh TEUs, enhancing the port’s throughput significantly.
SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Centre’s vision of world-class port infrastructure and trade facilitation. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from SMPK and JSW Infrastructure, including JSW Director Devki Nandan. This development marks a strategic step in strengthening the Kolkata Dock System’s capabilities to support growing trade demands and improve logistics efficiency in the region.
