SRMB Udyog Ltd (formerly, Steel
Rolling Mills of Bengal Ltd) is planning to set up a new unit in Durgapur for
an investment of around Rs 20 crore.
According to Mr Ashish Beriwala, Director,
the unit would have a capacity of 70,000 tonne of TMT bars and light
structurals. At present SRMB has a capacity of 30,000 tpa.
The investment would be funded by
internal resources and financial institutions. The plant would be commissioned
next year.
The company is planning to tap
ongoing domestic infrastructure projects, and would also look at the exports
market. Meanwhile, SRMB has developed a new design of the rib pattern of TMT
bars to yield more bonding and gripping on the bar with cement mortar. This has
around 50 per cent better grip over concrete than the company’s existing TMT
bars. Hennigsdorfer Stahl
Engineering GmbH is the technical collaborator of the company, and has also
supplied the company’s existing TMT plant.
(TMT or
thermo-mechanically treated bars are used for construction as reinforcement for
concrete columns.)
