Sterlite Technologies (STL), a global leader in optical and digital solutions, has taken a significant step toward sustainable manufacturing by partnering with Hygenco to establish Maharashtra’s first green hydrogen and green oxygen production facility dedicated to optical fibre production.

The green hydrogen project, located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, will supply 100 percent green hydrogen and oxygen to STL’s Gaurav glass preform facility, a critical component in optical fibre manufacturing. This initiative positions STL as one of the world’s first optical fibre manufacturers to integrate 100 percent green hydrogen into its production process, supporting its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030.

Hygenco will build, own, and operate the green hydrogen plant, ensuring a stable and commercially viable supply for the next 20 years. STL’s semiconductor-grade glass preform plant is an Industry 4.0-enabled facility that utilizes hydrogen and oxygen as fuel in blast furnaces to convert silica particles into high-quality glass. By adopting green hydrogen, STL expects to reduce its carbon emissions by approx. 30 percent annually. The plant also incorporates advanced autonomous energy management systems, real-time monitoring, and automated control technologies to boost safety and operational efficiency.
