Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg (HHBTMSM), popularly known as the Samruddhi Expressway, is set to transform into more than just a high-speed route linking Mumbai and Nagpur.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has launched plans to develop a hybrid renewable energy project along the 701-km stretch, integrating solar panels and wind turbines. A special purpose vehicle, Mahasamruddhi Renewable Energy, has been incorporated to drive the initiative.
The project aims to initially generate 150–200 MW of solar power, helping reduce electricity costs for expressway lighting, tunnels, and interchanges while creating an energy-efficient “green corridor.” Leveraging geography, the south-facing orientation of the expressway optimises solar panel efficiency, while natural wind flow and vehicle-induced drafts will enhance wind turbine output.
The project, implemented under a PPP model on a BOOT basis, will engage private developers. A consultant will soon be appointed to conduct feasibility studies, prepare detailed reports, and guide implementation, ensuring maximum utilisation of renewable energy potential.
