Swedish truck maker Scania is in the process of revamping its India operations under new leadership, focusing initially on mining and heavy construction sectors before expanding into on-road haulage within three to four years.
Led by industry veteran Silvio Munhoz, Scania sees India like a startup backed by Volkswagen Group, emphasising “solution sales” that bundle vehicles with financing, driver training, uptime guarantees, and resale support. The recently launched Super Series in India features globally homologated engines and chassis, offering fuel efficiency and compatibility with biodiesel (up to 100 percent), CNG, LNG, biogas, and future electrification.
Scania’s Narasapura plant near Bengaluru has a 2,000-unit capacity but low utilisation and below 30 percent localisation, which the company aims to improve by 2026 with insights from its China plant. Scania plans deeper localisation and possible fresh investments contingent on volume growth, aiming to become a competitive leader in India’s mining and construction haulage markets. Scania aims to replicate its global market share in mining, heavy cargo, and tractor-trailers in India.
