Japanese electronics giant Seiko Epson Corporation has made its first manufacturing investment in India by setting up an ink tank printer manufacturing facility in collaboration with Rikun at Sipcot Industrial Park, Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. Scheduled to begin operations in October, the plant will initially produce 20,000 units per month of Epson’s flagship EcoTank printers, which offer high-capacity, cartridge-free printing solutions.
Junkichi Yoshida, Global President of Seiko Epson, stated that India’s strong economic growth and the Central government's “Make in India” policy influenced the decision to establish a local manufacturing base. This facility joins Epson’s existing global production network that includes plants in the Philippines, Indonesia, China, and consumables manufacturing units in the US, UK, and other countries.
The move is not just to boost capacity but reflected Epson’s long-term business commitment to India, which currently contributes about eight percent to its global revenue. While the initial localisation levels will be modest, Epson is in talks with its manufacturing partner to maximise local production over the next two to three years.
