Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has announced that the last phase of the Shahpur-Kandi power project, a national project revived after four decades, will be completed by September 15.
“The water will start flowing through it for the generation of electricity,” he said at a DISHA meeting. The project will minimise excess River Ravi water flowing downstream to Pakistan via Madhopur Headworks, diverting it for use in J&K and Punjab. He also shared that the Ujh multipurpose project, conceived in the 1920s by Maharaja Hari Singh, has been revived with a coordination group of JK UT, Central, and Punjab officers.
The Minister noted the project’s strategic role in irrigation—covering up to 90,000 hectares—and checking infiltration routes via River Ujh. “An alternate plan is also being jointly prepared” to prevent surplus water from entering Pakistan.
